Cravings and Stress Eating: Battles You Should Not Fight. You’re Biologically Programmed to Lose .

Think fighting cravings withall your willpower is helpful for weight loss?  Think avoiding “comfort foods” during stressful times will lead you to your goals?  Think again.  Here’s some helpful research to guide you from “The Marshmallow Test: Mastering Self-Control:

“Activation of the hot (limbic) system triggers instantaneous action: hunger for food and desire for other alluring stimuli elicit rapid hot GO! behaviors…the hot system operates automatically and mostly UNCONSCIOUSLY (my all caps)….

High stress activates the hot system.  This response was adaptive in evolutionary history for dealing with oncoming lions because it produces amazingly rapid (in milliseconds), automatic, self protective reactions.  It is useful in many emergenciesin which survival requires instant action.  But this hot resposne is not useful when success depends on staying cool, planning ahead and problem solving rationally.”

So now you know more about how your brain truly functions.  You can continue to fight a DAILY NEVERENDING battle with yourself that you are programmed to lose due to the strength and control of your hot system,  or you can account for the way your brain makes decisions in your weight loss and fitness plan.  That’s what The EET Fitness Plan does, but you do have to be willing to learn a new way of thinking about weight loss, fitness and your relationship with food.  For example — think how different your weight loss and fitness efforts might be if you truly understood and believed this (because you’re brain/hot system already does!):
